“The Power of the Pattern”
Teachers: Ann Judy + Patty Stultz
Students explored putting together patches and scraps from old clothing, thus creating an entirely new fabric. They learned to use a pattern to further their knowledge of basic sewing skills. They were encouraged to embellish using both hand and machine to create a one-of-a-kind vest from a basic vest pattern. This project helps eliminate the use of raw materials and encourage students to keep old clothing items out of the landfill — an ongoing value of the Circle Round the Square fashion classes.
Learning new sewing skills benefits the learner by letting sewers make their own garments using timesaving patterns & creating unique items from up-cycled clothing and fabric. Young sewers can improve their sewing machine skills, foster creativity, and promote sustainability by reducing reliance on fast fashion.
