“Heroes in the Making”
Teacher: Cassidy Brauner Jarrahi
In this fast-paced, hands-on media arts class, students explored the world of superhero storytelling by creating their own original origin stories from concept to final film. Working with semi-professional video and audio equipment and editing in iMovie, they wrote, acted, filmed, and edited their short films over the course of just five days. The class emphasized character development, emotional depth, and creativity, inviting students to explore personal themes like identity, adversity, and resilience through the lens of superhero fiction.
Students collaborated to develop unique characters with imaginative powers, often blending humor with serious themes. Projects included everything from mock news segments and support groups for heroes with irrational powers to villain stories rooted in loss and personal trauma. Along the way, students learned essential skills in scriptwriting, cinematography, audio editing, and creative problem-solving. Each film served not only as a storytelling project but also as a reflection of the students’ own values and experiences.
