“Double Vision”
Teacher: Josh Birnbaum
This year’s photography class led students in making symbolic, dream-like imagery using instant cameras, film, and image deconstruction. In doing so, the class introduced children to the basics of photography including camera operation, guided creative assignments, development of artistic instinct, collaborative editing, manipulation of materials, and visualization of the unreal.
Using Fuji Instax cameras, kids were able to make images featuring components of their dreams. After photographing, the youth learned how to “deconstruct” the instant image — taking apart the layers to reveal the transparent emulsion beneath. They were then be able to layer these transparencies together to create dream-like, transparent, multiple exposure visions that expressed their inner worlds: the world of dreams.
